Local Business Meeting March 9, 2016 Labor Temple, Seattle WA Present were: Laura Novakoski, Ana Rivers, Ivan Weich, Tim Roark, Ardeth Bolin, John Pfannenstein, Cinthia Diaz and James Paxton. The meeting was called to order at 7:10pm. Agenda:
In the absence of both our Local President and Executive VP, normally the Secretary would chair the meeting tonight. James made a motion that Tim chair the meeting in place of Laura, so that she can be free to take notes for us this evening; Ana seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer’s Report: Ardeth provided a report for January and February. We now have about 650 members including about 22 retirees. We continue to spend more than we take in; February was particularly high due to the D.C. legislative conference. Old Business: None. New Business: None. Reports: Ivan reported on the legislative conference in Washington, D.C. that was held in February. A big issue was HR 4461, the so-called Employee Bill of Rights. It would prohibit dues withholding from payroll deductions, which would cripple the ability of Unions to collect the funds necessary to operate. Our friends on the Hill agreed that it was purely Union-busting and assured us they planned to vote it down. We are also currently asking for support for a pay raise for all federal employees of 5.3%. It has now been assigned a bill number and if it passes, it would take effect in 2017 – we need to talk this up because it is in need of co-sponsors. On March 16th John will be Steve Kofahl’s guest at the MLK Central Labor Council meeting. They will be hosting candidates who are vying for Jim McDermott’s seat for Washington’s 7th Congressional District. Ivan reports that he now serves as Vice President of the Kitsap Central Labor Council, where he has been involved since 2008. Minutes review: Ardeth made a motion that this evening’s LBM minutes be approved as written; James seconded. Motion passed. Laura moved to adjourn at 7:25pm; John seconded. Motion passed. Minutes written and submitted by Laura Novakoski, Secretary. |
