    JOIN AFGE

Interested in learning more about the Union and what we are doing for SSA employees? Do you want to support us and be able to participate in our bimonthly Local Business Meetings to hear more about what's up?

Go to https://join.afge.org/ to sign up with eDues.  You will be joining the roughly 500 members of our Local in SSA Region 10 who support us and who believe that what AFGE does is important.

Select “SSAFO” (field office or TSC) or "SSAOHO” (hearings office) or "SSAFA" (field assessment/OQR), then “L3937” for our Local number.  There are a couple more steps to direct the dues deduction of $19.60 (2023 rate) per pay period from whatever account or card you designate.

Once you have done that, please come back to our page to register with us . . . THANK YOU!

John started his career at SSA in 2008. He serves as our Local President, our Legislative Coordinator, and as the local Primary representative for his home office in Lynnwood, WA where he has worked as both a Claims Technical Expert and Claims Specialist.  He also represents employees at multiple other field office and OHO locations.  Committed to ensuring fairness in the workplace, John came to us through our AFGE Local 3937 Internship program, and he looks forward to advocating for the rights of his SSA colleagues both within his office and throughout the Agency.

    Executive Vice-President
    Adam Neff

    Email:

Adam joined SSA at the Portland, OR Hearing Office in 2009 after completing a Masters in History degree through Portland State University. Starting out as a Contact Representative, he worked his way through almost all the non-attorney staff positions in the office before becoming a Paralegal Specialist (Decision Writer) in 2017. Soon afterward, he took over as the AFGE rep for the office and joined the Local Board at the start of 2023. From rural Oregon originally, Adam came to Portland via a very circuitous route: wine country to Midwest suburb to Marine Corps to small college town to Big City. He loves Portland, swears he will never move again, and spends as much time as possible with his wife, two young children, and an old dog and young cat, all of whom have more energy than he.

    Secretary
    Laura Novakoski

    Email:

Laura began her SSA career in Wisconsin before moving to Oregon.  She volunteered to learn about being a local representative in the Portland NE office in 2003, and took over as Local Secretary for the Executive Board in 2004.  She now works in the Portland Metro office as an SSI Claims Technical Expert, mentors newer local reps, and serves as an off-site local representative for several other SSA offices in her area (when there isn't anyone on-site ready to give it a try themselves, which we always encourage!).

She has always been an enthusiastic advocate for employees, and as Secretary, she manages the Local's communications with our bargaining unit, our members and local representatives.  She serves as Primary or Alternate rep in multiple offices, writes and edits Executive Board and Local Business meeting minutes, helps to manage our website and Facebook pages, archives records and handles many other small details that keep the Local running smoothly.

    Treasurer
    Jackie Walton

    Email:

Jackie began working for Social Security in 2009 at the Auburn Teleservice Center, and after about 5 years transferred to the Tacoma FO, first as a CSR and later as a CS. When the former Tacoma AFGE rep retired she stepped in, and has been an AFGE rep and now officer ever since. In her free time she hangs out with her husband and feline companions.
